SUNSET PIER KEY WEST
Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 PM
I want to remind everyone that Dave and I are performing nightly at the SUNSET PIER at THE OCEAN KEY RESORT at 0 Duval through May, when we hit the road for four or five months. THE SUNSET PIER stage backs up to the beautiful Gulf of Mexico sunset and is one of the most beautiful spots you can imagine to hear music. THE SUNSET PIER is bringing in a number of national acts over the winter, STEPHEN MARLEY and STEEL PULSE to name a few, so keep an eye my web site, but unless special touring acts have the stage, we are there every Tuesday through Saturday, so come on down!
SUMMER/FALL TOUR
This is the time of year when Terry Lederer and I begin booking the summer tour. As I mentioned last month, we plan on expanding our route this year to regions of the country where we haven’t played much before, primarily west of the Mississippi. My lead guitarist, Dave Edmisten will be accompanying me for the majority of the tour; however, there will be a couple of short legs where I will be performing solo.
Seeing that we will be breaking lots of new ground with this expanded schedule, we could sure use your help in booking gigs in some of these new places. The following is the basic route and time frame we will attempt to stick to. If you have any booking ideas for clubs, small theatres or house concerts, please contact me at Scott@scottkirby.com and either Terry or I will get back to you promptly with specific dates and details.
June 3 -June 15 SCOTT SOLO: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina
June 16-July 4 SCOTT and DAVE: North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Ontario, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota
July 5 -15 SCOTT SOLO: South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Idaho
July 16-August 7 SCOTT and DAVE: Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia
August 13-August 24 SCOTT and DAVE: North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York
September dates TBA: New Jersey, New York and New England (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont)
Some dates are already set in stone, and on March 1st we will begin releasing those dates and adding to them to the web site.
AIRPLAY AND REVIEWS IN EUROPE!!!
I mentioned last month that the ROW ME HOME CD had started to receive some attention in Europe. Well, in the last few weeks various cuts from ROW ME HOME are being played on radio stations in Denmark, BBC Scotland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition, the CD has received a number of great reviews in Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Germany, and the airplay and reviews seem to be growing by the week! This is the direct result of the expert promotional work being done over there by Peter Holmstedt at Hemifran Music. Hemifran handles promotion and publicity for a number of American artists including Jackson Brown, and we signed on with them at the end of 2009. This is very exciting for me to break into this new market. I don’t yet know where this will all lead, but next month I will write much more about Hemifran, how this happened, and reviews and lists of stations for our listeners in the USA and Europe!
NEW WEB SITE TO BE UNVEILED ON MARCH 17th
Speaking of the web site, as mentioned in last month’s MUMBO JUMBO, we are working hard on building a completely new web site which will be unveiled on St. Patrick’s Day (it seemed to be a memorable roll out date)! The site will have a whole new look and content, including new high def video and photographs, and will be easier to navigate. I’m working closely with the folks at The Conch Republic Media Group here in Key West on the design, in conjunction with Gavin Smith and Michael White (at NRG Marketing in LA) who were instrumental in creating the logo for the ROW ME HOME cover and our other new marketing materials such as business cards, letterhead, envelopes and promotional kits. If you want a great taste of Key West lifestyle, go online and check out www.conchtv.com and www.conchrepublicradio.com, and mark down March 17th to view the new site!
TALES BEHIND THE TUNES
“Valentine’s Day”
Each month I try to explain where the inspiration for a particular song came from, and seeing we’re into February, it’s time to spill the beans on VALENTINE’S DAY! I can’t recall if it was three or four Valentine’s Days ago, but I happened to be on the phone with my good friend and assistant, Terry Lederer (who shares my twisted sense of humor). Terry knew I was alone in dreary, cold New Hampshire that particular day and sometime during the conversation blurted out, “So what are YOU doing for Valentine’s Day, getting a hooker?” I quickly and calmly responded, “Nah, it’s really hard to find a hooker on Valentine’s Day.” We simultaneously broke into hysterical laughter, immediately recognizing that there indeed was some perverse, ironic truth in this! Right then I decided to write the song.
I kept some sporadic notes for a few months and later in the fall I wrote the song in my cabin of the sailboat “Messin About” while tied up to the dock in Nantucket one cool morning.
Sometime the following year, Dave and I were playing at The Hogs Breath in Key West. While finishing the performance of the song we noticed a very attractive young girl sitting at the bar to our right unsuccessfully fighting back tears. Trying to cheer her up, I simply asked, ”Did we say something wrong?” She started to cry and laugh at the same time and said, “My ex boyfriend cheated on me with a hooker on Valentine’s Day.” The entire bar started howling. I’m sure it was a cathartic moment for her.
As always, thanks for listening!!
