THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD TRIP CONTINUES…
Since beginning the summer tour in Florida on June 12, we have logged over 13,000 miles and travelled to some of the most beautiful places in America (and the world for that matter). As I sit here in Texas, getting ready to move on to New Orleans and then to the mid-Atlantic, and finally home to New England, I’m feeling very bittersweet. I can’t wait to see to my great friends and sit on a sailboat on the historic, rocky coastline there, but also feel a deep sadness about leaving the stunning natural beauty and wide open spaces of the American west. I have spent nearly a month motoring through Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, and it has been nothing short of spectacular; a dream trip really.
I think every region of the country has its own special charm, but the vast and varied landscapes, the awesome geological beauty and the unmistakable spirit and grit of the west is something special, something uniquely American and I absolutely love it.
Coincidentally, I just now received a call from my old friend and political colleague, Dayton Duncan. One of the true aficionados and lovers of the American road trip, and a darn good guitar player and songwriter, Dayton helped to pique my interest in the West in 1982 when he wrote OUT WEST, after retracing the agonizing steps of the historic Lewis and Clark expedition in his Volkswagen bus. Dayton then went on to co-write and co- produce the Lewis and Clark series with esteemed filmmaker Ken Burns, as well as the Mark Twain Series and the most recent PBS series on our National Parks, AMERICA’S BEST IDEA. He also wrote HORATIO’S DRIVE, a fantastic account of the first cross country trip across America in an automobile back when there were only 150 miles of paved road. (See Dave, it’s not so bad now!) I was thinking about Dayton a lot on this trip and gave him a call after visiting the landing spot of Lewis and Clark near Astoria, Oregon, at the mouth of the Columbia River. If you have missed any of his work, its brilliant and you deserve to experience it!
Although I have travelled out west a number of times, this is the first time we’ve really toured in the region and I want to thank all of you who have helped us with bookings and come to our shows. It has been a very successful and wonderful experience and I can assure you we’ll be back in 2011!!
