MUMBO JUMBO – July 2014

GREETINGS FROM INDIANA!

I’ve just spent two weeks in the great American West performing in Montana, Washington, California, Arizona and Oklahoma. I crossed the Mississippi River last Friday to finish the final three weeks of the summer tour back in the east. It’s been a long journey but I never tire of experiencing the awesome natural beauty of this incredibly diverse land. It seems every other day I’m staring in wonder at some amazing site that most people venture to see once in a lifetime.

July 5 was a perfect example as Dave and I left northern Wisconsin at sunrise to make a 16-hour drive to Montana. What I call a transition day. Within 45 minutes of leaving, a gigantic bald eagle swooped right down in front of the van to pick up some road kill, scaring the hell out of me as I wasn’t quite awake yet. A little farther west on a deserted Route 2, a fox stood along the road, defiantly staring at us as we glided by, and fifteen minutes later a big old black bear lazily lumbered across the highway from left to right a hundred yards in front of us. The amazing road trip continued along the rugged shore of Lake Superior and the pristine lake country of Minnesota. We were in the great state of Montana by 5pm and settled into a sidewalk cafe in Livingston for a drink just in time to see the sun settle behind the purple mountains.

After finishing the August shows on the 17th, I head north to New England to sail for a couple of weeks on my newly acquired little blue boat, maybe do a little writing, and rest up for the September dates which will include the annual tour with Peter and Brendan Mayer and a couple of shows with the incredible Massacoustics. I have to admit I’m looking forward to these upcoming shows as much as I’m looking forward to sailing. Another blessing of my job!

SEPTEMBER 12th AND 13th WITH THE MASSACOUSTICS!

On September 12, I will be teaming up with Matt and Andy Thompson of the Massacoustics for a show in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. If you’ve never heard these two brothers from Norwell, Massachusetts, you are in for a treat. Matt and Andy are phenomenal musicians and brilliant songwriters. Their tune, “Soundtrack of the Summer,” has been a mainstay on Radio Margaritaville for five years and their live performances give new meaning to the term dynamic duo. I’ve been very fortunate to have these guys play on two of my CDs and performing with them is always an absolute blast! Tickets are available  at: http://www.eventzilla.net/web/event?eventid=2139033652.

PETER MAYER, SCOTT KIRBY & BRENDAN MAYER CONCERT TOUR

As if that’s not enough fun for one weekend, the very next night Matt, Andy and I join Peter and Brendan Mayer at The Sandbar Grill in Taunton, Massachusetts. I think the last time we all got together on the same stage was about seven years ago in Rhode Island. Pete and Brendan are flying in to kick off our annual September tour and it worked out that we could all join together for one show in Taunton. Tickets will go on sale August 1st for this show.

The next day, Sunday, September 14, Pete, Brendan and I head for Amagansett, Long Island, to perform at the legendary Stephen Talkhouse, one of my favorite little venues in the country.

After a couple days off, we head south to play at The Manayunk Brewery on September 17 and down to Jersey Shore the next night at The Sandi Pointe Bistro in Somers Point, New Jersey. We round the week out at the annual Benefit for The Rainbow Theuraputic Riding Center in Manassas with harmonica monster Gary Green, and then finish with a bang in Annapolis, Maryland, for the tenth annual Boatyard Beach Bash at The Annapolis Maritime Museum. Also performing that day, the John Frinzi Band and Coral Reefers Michael Utley and Doyle Grisham. What a line-up in one of my favorite towns!

I would encourage you to get advance tickets for these shows as the venues are intimate and many of them will be sell outs. Check my schedule for details, ticket information and show times.

CAPTAIN FRANK BRADDICK

There are so many of you who lend us a hand on the road, but this month I want to give a shout out to Captain Frank Braddick of Montauk, New York, as we recently invaded his lovely home while performing at The Stephen Talkhouse. If you’ve ever been out to that neck of the woods, east of the tony Hamptons, you know that Paul McCartney could be pumping gas next to you and there is no Motel 6, and if there was, it would be $900 a night! Captain Frank fishes on the 43ft “Hurry Up” out of Montauk and if you are ever looking for a great fishing charter give him a ring at 516-220-2065 or e-mail him at hurryup4@optonline.net. Hurry up!

Thanks for listening!
