MUMBO JUMBO – May 2014

May 2014

GREETINGS FROM THE ROCKY COAST OF NEW ENGLAND!

I’ve been up here charging my batteries a bit in preparation for the upcoming 12-week tour, which will take me all the way across the country to Seattle, down the west coast to San Diego and back east again. My fantastic guitarist, Dave Edmisten, will be joining me for the lion’s share of the shows, and it looks like we’ll be traveling through about 35 states and parts of Canada over the coming three months.

As much as I enjoy spending winter in Key West playing at The Smokin’ Tuna, I truly love the rhythm of the road and the opportunity to play in every corner of this beautiful continent each year. I suppose only a dedicated gypsy would understand that, but it’s one of my favorite parts of the job.

Please keep an eye on our schedule, and help spread the word when we are in your neck of the woods. Also if you want to bring us to your home town, it’s not too late to add a show. E-mail me at scott@scottkirby.com or terry@scottkirby.com.

SMOKIN’ TUNA CELEBRATES ITS THIRD ANNIVERSARY!

It seems hard to believe but “The Tuna,” as we affectionately refer to it, celebrates its third year in operation this month. Thanks to all of your support and the incredibly hard work of our managing partner, Charlie Bauer, we’re enjoying building one of the best 200 seat music destinations in the country.

If any of you were recently at the 19th annual Key West Songwriters’ Festival, you may have had a difficult getting in the joint as there were typically twice that number crammed in listening to some of the best songwriters and musicians in the world.

I’ve performed at 14 of the past festivals, but have been absent the last couple of years as I had conflicting shows associated with The Kentucky Derby. When I flew into Key West for this year’s festival, I was struck by the huge number of people descending on our tiny island for this week long event. I’ve been told that with 165 performing songwriters on hand, it’s now the largest event of its kind in the world
I recall when my partner, Charlie Bauer, started this fledgling event back in 1996, with a handful of writers from Nashville. For the first few years it bounced along as a tiny event, gathering a few new fans and songwriters each year. Gradually the word spread around Nashville about the magic of Key West, and Mark Mason of BMI teamed up with Charlie to build the event into what it is today. When we opened the Smokin’ Tuna in 2011, it was just a natural fit to become the hub of this festival.

Unfortunately, we can’t fit you all in “The Tuna” at one time!
