ONE PARTICULAR HARBOR

It was a bit sad to leave my one particular harbor yesterday, but I’m off to start leg two of the tour tonight in Columbus, Ohio. This is a photo of our shingled cottage and the white boathouse studio in Maine, taken at low tide from my sailboat. At high tide the blue water laps at the doorstep of the boathouse, so we’re hoping global warming doesn’t bring the sea too close anytime soon. The cove attracts a cheery variety of songbirds and swooping and swimming waterfowl looking for their next meal from the constantly changing tide, which averages 9 feet. I was surprised to see an otter bounce his way across the mud flat into the water the other day, and soon the striped bass will be feeding a mere 100 yards off the dock. It’s a perfectly serene setting and I hope the red tail hawk that upset the natural neighborhood last year won’t find his way back.

PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE
This little cove sits off the Piscataqua River that separates Kittery, Maine, from historic Portsmouth, New Hampshire, just a half mile up river from the mighty North Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1623, Portsmouth is rich in history with beautiful colonial architecture and enough great restaurants (and pubs) to keep you busy for weeks. To my eye, it’s one of the prettiest small cities in America and a fitting gateway to the great state of Maine. If you’re ever up this way, you won’t regret a stop in Portsmouth!

ALAN DOYLE

Thanks to all of you who have purchased La Casa Cayo Hueso and to Canadian singer/songwriter Alan Doyle who wrote the tune “Ordinary Day” with his Great Big Sea band mate Sean McCann. Great Big Sea emerged from Newfoundland over twenty years ago to become one of the biggest bands in Canada, selling millions of records there.
