MUMBO JUMBO – September 2014
MUMBO JUMBO
September 2014
Greetings from the coast of Maine, on another wicked beautiful day of late summer sunshine aboard our little blue boat, “Defiant.” That’s my partner, Sean McKenna, on deck making some adjustments after we recently launched our newly acquired Frers 30 in Kittery, Maine. I met Sean nearly 30 years ago when he was home from college and running the launch in Little Harbor, New Hampshire. He introduced me to his father, Bruce, who was looking for crew to help deliver the family sailboat to St. Augustine, Florida so Sean might have a place to live his senior year at Flagler. Three days later I was on board the Ericson 32 headed offshore with four complete strangers on what turned out to be quite an adventure, including a battle with a nasty tropical storm a hundred miles off the coast of New Jersey and another harrowing day and night near Cape Fear, North Carolina.
The “Natalie” and crew eventually arrived in Florida, battered and bruised, but in one piece, and I became lifelong friends and sailing buddies with Bruce and eventually purchased the “Natalie” from him. Over the last 25 years we made many colorful and comical trips up and down the coast of Maine and out to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, some resulting in harrowing groundings, periodic bloodshed and lots of laughs.
Sadly, Bruce passed away two years ago but I’ve remained in regular contact with Sean and when I ran into him in St. Augustine, Florida, in April, he told me he and his family were moving back to Maine. I jokingly mentioned buying a boat together and in one of the great impulsive shopping moves ever, Sean immediately marched me into his office and pulled up a Frers 30 on his computer he had been eyeing for a few weeks. The boat was located in southern Maine and I was on my way to New England on tour, so I went and looked at her with Sean’s brother Kyle, who happened to be a boat broker in Maine. Soon after Sean drove up and next thing you know we were proud owners of “Defiant.” Sean’s second brother Todd joined us as a partner, and here we are, sailing off the coast of Maine! There just seemed to be a certain symmetry to the whole thing, and now Sean has taken a new position as CEO of Great Bay Marine in Newington, New Hampshire, so if we do run “Defiant” aground at some point, at least we can get her repaired!
MASSACOUSTICS COME TO NEW HAMPSHIRE!
Next week it’s back to work as I’ll be opening for the amazing Massacoustics, who are flying in from Nashville to play a benefit in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for the Seacoast Food Pantry on Friday, September 12, at the VFW Hall in downtown Portsmouth. It’s their only full New England show of the year so I hope you’ll have the opportunity to catch them.
Matt and Andy Thompson originally hail from Norwell, Massachusetts, and performed for years as The Thompson Brothers. They had a top twenty hit with “Back on the Farm” on RCA records Nashville. I first met them in Key West about 10 years ago and they immediately blew me away as one of the most dynamic live acts I had seen play in town. We try to get them to The Smokin’ Tuna at least twice a year as they always pack the place. If you haven’t seen them I guarantee you won’t regret the experience! PETER MAYER, SCOTT KIRBY & BRENDAN MAYER TOUR
On Saturday, September 13th, Peter and Brendan Mayer fly in to kick off what has become our annual September acoustic tour at The Baha Brothers Sandbar Grill in Taunton, Massachusetts, and as a bonus The Massacoustics will be playing an opening set.
Pete and I have been doing these periodical mini tours together for nearly 20 years and it’s wonderful to have Brendan join us again this year. Brendan’s new singles “Getaway Car” and “Something to Say” are available on iTunes and if you’ve been following the Jimmy Buffett tour or listening to Radio Margaritaville, you know he has been taking the country by storm as the featured guest artist throughout the summer concerts.
On Sunday, September 14, we head to Long Island, New York, to the legendary Stephen Talkhouse for a show and then south to the Manayunk Brewery in Philadelphia on September 17. From there it’s down to the Jersey shore for our annual show at the Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro on the 18th, with special guest Lew London, then on to Manassas, Virginia, on the 19th for the Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center’s fundraiser where Jim Mayer and Gary Green will be joining us. We finish up in Annapolis, Maryland, on September 20, at the benefit for the Annapolis Maritime Museum, where we are on the bill with The John Frinzi Band and Mike Utley and Doyle Grisham.
