Mumbo Jumbo March 2018

New England after the storm

Greetings from Maine! I got home just in time to experience the latest nor’easter to visit New England. If you’re from points west or other parts of the world, and wondering what the hell a nor’easter is, it’s basically our Atlantic coast’s winter version of a hurricane. You’ll notice they look very similar on the weather map, with a counter-clockwise rotation that typically spins off strong northeast winds, thus the name. Because of the frigid water, winds don’t typically get much above 70 or 80 mph, but at 15 degrees that puts the wind chill at about -25. Lovely!

I just played a show in Connecticut at the Madison Beach Songwriters’ Series. Thanks to you all for making the show a sellout. Some of you ventured out after the storm, even though you had no power at home!

I fly back to Key West on Monday for a one-week engagement at the Smokin’ Tuna and the Mayer Kirby Mayer concert on Tuesday, March 20. General admission tickets are still available online. From there it’s on to my yearly show in Venice, Florida, with Sunny Jim on March 22 and the Hideaway Cafe the following night in St. Petersburg. The Venice show is sold out, but some tickets are still available for the Hideaway, so grab yours soon. On March 24, I’ll be performing a house concert in Jacksonville on my way north.

Florida Keys after the hurricane

I want to let you know how appreciative the residents and business owners of the Florida Keys are to those of you who have visited in recent months. Tourism is nearly back to normal and travelers have discovered that Key West suffered comparatively little damage from Hurricane Irma, as most of the serious damage occurred in the middle Keys. They are also making their way back, but it will take a bit longer.

Also a special thanks to all of you who purchased the Chasing Hemingway’s Ghost CD. A portion of last year’s profits will go to hurricane relief.

May tour with Matt and Andy Thompson

I am really looking forward to May when I board the tour van with Matt and Andy Thompson of the Massacoustics for two weeks of double-billed shows, beginning at Natalie’s on May 7 in Columbus, Ohio. The following night we’re performing at the City Winery in Nashville, May 11 at the Latchkey in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, May 12 at the Sandbar Grill in Taunton, Massachusetts, and May 16 at the Ram’s Head in Annapolis. Tickets are currently on sale for all these shows. See my website for ticket information, and stay tuned for other bookings to be announced in the next week.

Matt and Andy have played on three of my albums. They will be backing me up for the first half of the concert and then will perform their material in the second half. We’ll have some special guests along the way, and if you’ve never seen these two amazing brothers perform, you are in for a treat.

A new community in South Carolina

On Thursday, May 3, I’ll be returning for my third engagement at the Roasting Room, one of the best 100-seat listening rooms in the east. Located in Bluffton, South Carolina, near Hilton Head, this intimate venue has become one of my favorite stops on the summer tour. I was introduced to this club by my old friend Chris Bowes. I met Chris 20 years ago when he began selling my CDs in his store in New Hope, PA, and helped Pete Mayer and me get bookings in the area. About 15 years ago, he moved with his family to Bluffton and started his own real estate company.

Chris told me last month that Parrotheads have been coming to town to check out the new Buffett-inspired Latitudes Hilton Head housing community being constructed nearby. If you are in the Hilton Head area and looking at this new project, give my friend Chris a call at (843) 368-2935, and I hope to see you at the Roasting Room.

Summer tour

After finishing my May tour with the Massacoustics, I’m off to points south and west to play a few shows on the Gulf Coast and some great new venues in Texas before heading to Arizona and California in June. July has me mainly in the Midwest and Canada, and I return east for lots of shows in August. In September it’s the annual Mayer Kirby Mayer tour.

Many of these dates are already listed on my website. If you see I’m going to be in your area and you have an idea for a venue or house concert, please email me at Scott@ScottKirby.com or contact Terry Lederer at Terry@ScottKirby.com
