Mumbo Jumbo June 2018

Greetings from the Lucky Enough early morning on Tuesday, where I’ve been hunkered down for two nights enjoying the brisk breezes and pounding rain from tropical storm Alberto. There’s nothing like sleeping on a boat in a storm, and I have my friends Glen and Jimmie Sue to thank for putting me up for a few nights between my Gulf Coast shows and my drive today to Texas. I understand the storm was quite a bit worse east of here, so I hope was there was minimal damage and flooding and it didn’t ruin everyone’s Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day

Speaking of lucky enough, I was on the phone yesterday with an old songwriter buddy who said he had just finished singing a song he had written years ago for a few of his friends who did not make it back from Vietnam. He said he sings the song every year and thinks about his mates, and it touched me and reminded me to do the same and also to count my blessings. I shouldn’t need a holiday to remind me to think of those lost and to appreciate all the servicemen and women across this crazy planet, trying to protect us and citizens of other war-torn places who are just trying to live one more day.

I had dinner this weekend with someone who recently retired from a long career in the Navy and signed up to work in Somalia. He was shipping off soon for his next three-month stint away from his wife and home. I asked him what he was doing there and he said, “We basically spend every day trying to prevent people from either starving or dying of thirst.”

We are indeed lucky enough.

Summer tour

I’m off to the great state of Texas shortly for four shows and looking forward to rolling across the open plains of the lone star state. My favorite drive of my summer tour starts today. I love the drive across Texas, through New Mexico and Arizona to California, and then east through Idaho and Montana. Even if I wasn’t on tour, I would do this drive every year until they take away my driver’s license, simply to clear my head and stop my brain from spinning out of control. As one who never spends more than two weeks in the same place, and who has WCC (worsening concentration condition), this is my medicine.

I’m looking forward to opening the Texstar Ford Summer Music Series in Stephenville on Thursday night with Roger Creager and then I’ll be back in Stephenville Saturday night, June 2, to play at a songwriter’s night with Larry Joe Taylor at T-Birds Garage Pub on his Melody Mountain Ranch. On Friday, June 1, I’m at Oscar’s in Fort Worth and on June 5 I play at T-Bone Tom’s in Kemah.

On June 7, I’ll be in Tucson at Fini’s Landing and then on to California to play in Alta Loma, Redwood, Embassy Suites in Sacramento, and Rocklin. Check my schedule for details and ticket info for these shows.

Mayer Kirby Mayer tour

I guess it’s not too early to mention the upcoming Mayer Kirby Mayer tour. We’re playing a dozen shows in September. Most of them are listed on my web site, and tickets will be available to all shows in the coming weeks.

Check my website for details of these and for all events in June and July.

See you on the road and thanks for listening!
