MUMBO JUMBO – September 2013

September 2013

It’s my favorite time of year up here in New England, and I recently had the good fortune of spending four quiet days on the magical island of Nantucket.  This fifty square mile island, once the capital of the world’s whaling industry, is known as “The Little Grey Lady of the Sea.”

Perched about thirty miles south of Cape Cod, the low lying island is often shrouded in fog, thus the name. In my dozens of visits here, many by sailboat, I’ve not run into a lot of fog, but leaving the island yesterday by single engine airplane, I was struck by the thousands of grey-shingled cottages and mansions sprinkled all over the landscape.  Grey is definitely a prominent color here, as well as green, as Nantucket has become one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world.

Fortunately in September, as the weather cools slightly, and shops and restaurants start to close for the season, the door opens for a little “gypsy in the palace” time for a guy like me.  A close friend called to say his cottage near the village of Sisconset was empty for a few days, so I grabbed the chance to chill for a bit before starting my tour with Peter Mayer on the 12th of September.

I guess one of the best things about being a traveling minstrel is I have a flexible schedule, and these opportunities pop up for me now and then through the generosity of successful friends.

I haven’t found the island yet where all the beautiful cottages and seaside estates are owned by guitar pickers and songwriters, but I’m still looking.

SOL SEARCHING COVER PRINTS AVAILABLE SOON!

As I’ve toured around the country this summer, many of you have commented on the wonderful watercolor painting by artist Phyllis London on the cover of my most recent CD, and some have asked whether it might become available in a print.

I spoke to Phyllis and encouraged her to make signed prints available to you and she has done just that, and will soon be available on my web site. The high quality 9.5 X 13.5 prints can be matted to fit in a standard 16 X 20 frame with a 2 ¼” mat.  These limited edition giclee prints of the original artwork for “Sol Searching” are signed and numbered and are carefully packaged for mailing with a certificate of authenticity.  These beautiful prints are $50, plus $4.00 handling and make great gifts for collectors!

Phyllis is the wife of Lew London, who engineered and produced “Sol Searching.”  Every time I’ve visited their home I’ve been struck by her wonderful paintings and asked her if she could create something for the “Sol Searching” cover, and the rest is history.

Phyllis has a long relationship with the sea as she grew up on the Jersey Shore with her father, legendary boat builder Joseph Cherubini. Phyllis worked on many of these lovely vessels which must have given her an early appreciation of nautical beauty and an artist’s eye for stunning seascapes.

Her paintings have appeared in numerous publications and magazines around the country and she is a signature member of the Noyes Museum. For more information on the artist Phyllis C. London, visit her website!

We hope to see you on the road in the next couple of weeks!
