MUMBO JUMBO – August 2011
GREETINGS!
One of the absolutely best things about my job is that I get to travel so much around this amazing country and visit so many great friends! On July 1, I drove across the Arizona desert into the Los Angeles area to spend Fourth of July weekend with my friends Claudia and Gavin, at their beautiful home in Venice. After a long trip across Texas and the southwest, it was great to be in one spot for a few days, enjoying fabulous food everyday and basking in the ideallic southern California weather.
We cooked out three nights in a row and also got to catch up with friend (and “Row Me Home” producer) Russ Kunkel and run a few new songs by him before he left for a European tour with Lyle Lovett. Not only did he offer some helpful edits to the brand new tunes, he brought the most amazing salmon burgers I have ever tasted! Gavin grilled tuna, shrimp and steaks and Claudia prepared amazing salads everyday and we ate like kings! A welcome change from the boring road diet of granola bars, nuts and bananas!
Then it was on to San Francisco, Portland, and up to Seattle for three shows and some time with old friends from Key West out on the Olympic Peninsula near Port Angeles. We enjoyed a great hike up on Hurricane Ridge where I realized that sneakers were not the preferred footwear in July (they received 44 ft of snow there this winter!) but the scenery was spectacular, reminding me of the Swiss Alps.
After three great shows in Seattle, it was time to start pointing the van east. I left at 7am and thoroughly enjoyed a gorgeous 12-hour drive through Washington, Northern Idaho and Montana, stopping to see Dink Bruce, a friend from Key West for the night in Livingston, Montana.
There’s nothing better than having a friend and a good drink waiting for you as a reward for a long drive, and pulling up in front of the bar at 7pm under a brilliant blue evening sky at the Murray Hotel was perfect! A classic bar in a beautiful western railroad town that seems wonderfully unscarred by modern times and inhabited by the most friendly folks one could imagine. It didn’t hurt that Dink has been spending summers here for 38 years and seemed to know everyone in town, but when I went to the local gym at 8 in the morning to work off a slight hangover, I was sold! The incredibly friendly owner popped her head out of the back room where she was painting the walls and said “sorry about my appearance, you must think Montana women are crazy! It’s $7 and just yell if you need anything!” That was it… I was in love with Livingston!! I want to spend more time here! A friendly fitness club owner with paint in her hair who greets you in old sweats and says pardon my appearance?? Now that’s how a middle aged, overweight man wants to be greeted at a strange gym!!!!!
This was my first trip to Montana and what a gorgeous place! There are certain places you visit in your life and you immediately know THIS is a place I will return to! Key West was like that for me in 1983, Martha’s Vineyard was like that when I first visited in 1973! Livingston is such a place. There is something about the mountains of Montana that seem different than anything I have seen anywhere else. I guess it must be the awesome sense of space and enormous green valleys that spread out before you as far as the eye can see that make it so inspiring.
I played a few nights later to a great crowd in Omaha, and was speaking of my drive through Montana and asked how many folks in the crowd had been there. Not one person raised their hand, and I suddenly felt very, very fortunate.
