MUMBO JUMBO – DECEMBER 2011

MUMBO JUMBO

December 2011

GREETINGS  from Key West on a sunny cool morning.   I just finished an incredibly busy November, in which I played 23 shows at The Smokin’ Tuna Saloon and hoping for a more relaxed December.  I’m looking forward to performing in Tampa at “The Yard” house concert series on Saturday, December 3rd, and jumping on a plane on the 4th to fly to New Hampshire, for a week to see family and friends and maybe even squeeze in a day or two of writing.    I arrive back in Key West on the 13th and leave for Guantanamo Bay on the 15th for two shows (more about that later) and then perform at The Smokin’ Tuna December 19 through January 1st, with Dave Edmisten.

Our first real cold front of the season came through yesterday afternoon (it dipped into the 60’s last night!) and I was lucky enough to be out on the water sailing when the rather impressive squall line formed and approached from the west an hour before sunset.  When we left the dock around two o’clock, there was not a cloud in the sky and fifteen knots of breeze, but less than two hours later a rather ominous looking black cloud bank was battling with the sun to dominate the sky, making for some interesting photo ops!

We were celebrating one of the Wicked Sisters’ 39th birthday aboard SUNLUVER, a beautiful Lagoon 44ft Catamaran we had chartered for the occasion, which is owned and operated by Captain Bob Olin.  This is the second time this month we’ve chartered Sunluver.   If you‘re looking for a great private sailing charter on an awesome boat, check out their site at http://www.sunluvercharters.com/ or call Captain Bob at 612-308-7087 and tell him I sent you!

A few weeks ago Tom and Aquila, friends from New Zealand and Australia, were visiting Key West for a few days.  Aside from being a lover of sailing and fishing and a fantastic young woman, Aquila happens to be a very beautiful and successful model!  Hmm… I had an idea! The weather was perfect for a sail, so off we went on Sunluver for the afternoon with a boatload of Smokin’ Tuna shirts, in search of the perfect late afternoon light.   Blake Nadilo, who just moved to Key West from New Hampshire, and whose sister Kirby Nadilo bartends at The Tuna, happens to be a pretty good looking guy and came onboard to wear the men’s stuff.  You’ll be seeing more of them down the road on our web site and the Tuna catalogue!

For those of you who haven’t been to Key West since we opened The Smokin’ Tuna in June, the Mercantile shop is now fully stocked with over forty different clothing items including a wide variety of tees, tanks, polos, sweats and hats in a bunch of great colors.  Check us out at smokintunasaloon.com.

OFF TO GUANTANAMO BAY!

On December 15, I’m taking a small band down to perform two shows for some of the troops at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.  Apparently they have a great club on the beach so I’m sure we’ll feel right at home.  I was honored to be asked to come down and play and felt it was the least we could do for our men and women who don’t have the luxury of coming home at Christmas.   I also want to thank my partners at The Smokin’ Tuna for sending down some shirts for the troops and guitarist Dave Edmisten, fiddle player Lew London, percussionist Charlie Bauer and production manager JL Jamison, for volunteering their time to make the trip!

FIRST TOUR OF 2012

Feb 29 –March 18  “SPRING TUNA RUN!”

In late February, I’ll be doing a quick 20-day tour from Key West to New Hampshire and back, playing primarily solo up and down the East Coast.  Some of the shows are already listed on my web site, and the rest should be on the schedule before the end of the month.  We have a few open dates along the way and if you have any ideas for a booking please contact Terry Lederer at terry@scottkirby.com.

I’m referring to this as the “Spring Tuna Run,” because I’ll be bringing a lot of Smokin’ Tuna merchandise on this tour for those of you who don’t have a chance to get down to Key West this winter.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

I want to thank you all for your support this year and wish you the very best of holidays and hope 2012 is a prosperous and happy one for you.  I look forward to seeing you either here in Key West or out there on the road in your home town sometime over the spring and summer!
And again, thanks for listening!!
