MUMBO JUMBO – Holiday Issue 2010

SEASONS GREETINGS!

It seems only fitting that after this year of extreme travel – nearly 30,000 miles by van and who knows how many more by air- that I’m writing the final Mumbo Jumbo of 2010 from the seat of a 767 somewhere over Texas.   I’m headed back from L.A., on a real spur of the moment trip to visit my friends Gavin and Claudia and the fabulous little Ava, and to attend the most colossal holiday party in L.A., thanks to the kind invitation from our buddy Kevin Grady!  Another small world story spawned from the entertainment capital of the universe… New Hampshire!!

It’s been a great year but an extremely busy one.  As I look back on the schedule for 2010, it looks like I’ve only been home in Key West for about 30 days of the past six months.   I did get to spend quite a bit of time in my other home, New Hampshire, and with all the travel I do, there are other towns along that way that feel a bit like home when I pull into town after a long drive.  Towns like Annapolis, Ellicottville, Madison, Louisville, Charleston, Perdido Key and countless others where we get a day or two between shows.

But the real third home for me is what we call the “Little Flock Distribution, Bed and Breakfast, Automotive and Tennis Center” in Oak Hill, Virginia!   That is where my fabulous assistant Terry Lederer and her husband, Chuck live.  Unfortunately for them, they happen to reside at the cross roads of much of our east coast touring,  so many times during the course of the year we pull into their cul de sac in the filthy van for a few days of catching up on business and some R and R.   Terry always has the liquor cabinet filled and feeds us like kings, and Chuck (who can fix anything) gets stuck with the van maintenance, repairing the road beaten sound gear and listening to the occasional “gig from hell” story over too many drinks!

One time this summer, after a particularly grueling leg from California, culminating in a 16 hour drive from New Orleans to Virginia, I jokingly called and said, “Chuck, we’ll be in about 9 tonight for dinner and drinks. The van needs a new windshield, four new tires and an oil change and could you wash and wax it, fix the PA system and take a look at my computer?”  His reply is not printable!!   Thank you Terry and Chuck for the years of support!!

BACK AT THE PIER HOUSE IN KEY WEST IN JANUARY!

I’ve been getting lots of e mails regarding my winter schedule, as I usually try to stay close to home in Key West during the difficult travel months.  Dave Edmisten and I have several engagements at Margaritaville in Key West, and Snappers in Key Largo, and I will be spending a little time up in New Hampshire writing, but the majority of weekends between January and Spring I’ll be performing at the Pier House Beach Bar, at 1 Duval St., right on the sand facing the Gulf of Mexico!   I have a long relationship with the Pier House dating back to 1989, and you may have seen Peter Mayer and I perform our annual show there on the beach in years past. The Beach Bar is a magical spot and great refuge from the madness of Duval St., and even though it’s right on the Gulf of Mexico, the bar is sheltered from the chilly winds that sometimes blow in the winter, so it’s weatherproof!!

I’ll be there many weekends, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 7pm to 10pm, so stay tuned to the website, as the schedule will be posted soon!

A NEW SONG, “GUYS LIKE US,” NOW AVAILABLE ON iTUNES

Dave and I have been playing a song titled “Guys Like Us” all summer and many of you have asked if the tune is on any of my CDs.  It is not, but we did record it in Los Angeles last year.  I was planning to save it for the next CD, but instead have decided to release it as single and make it available on iTunes.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND NEW YEAR!

I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to each and every one of you for your support over this past year. I can’t thank you enough for listening to my music and taking time out of your busy schedules to come see us perform.  Although I would love to be travelling around the country playing 10,000 seat arenas, one of the best things about performing at more intimate venues, is that we often get to spend a little time with you after the shows.   It’s that connection that makes my job so rewarding and frankly keeps us going through some often difficult and trying circumstances out on the road.
Because of that personal connection I have with so many of you, I’m also painfully aware that some of you have had difficult times this year and others have lost loved ones.  I have seen too many friends at my shows over the past few years that are not with us now.  I only mention this because as a songwriter and travelling troubadour, I feel it’s  my responsibility to come to town with a smile on my face and seemingly not a care in the world, even though often times, that may not be the reality in my life or yours.  As Mac McAnally so eloquently wrote, “It’s my job!”

We might be in different boats, but we’re all rolling down the same river, so I hope for those of you who have had a difficult year, 2011 is better!

And once again, thanks for listening!
