PLAICE COVE, NH The first day of autumn arrives this weekend and these Brian Wilson lyrics from the song off the Beach Boys latest CD have been stuck in my head for two weeks now! Here in New Hampshire we’ve had a few nights in the 40’s already, the sun is lower in the bright blue sky and a touch of yellow and orange is sneaking on to some of the trees.
Summer in New England is fantastic but September is special! For me this month carries with it a combination of the most acute ecstasy and leaden melancholy one can possibly imagine. It may bring back memories of returning to school, or perhaps the anxiety over the Canadian weather marching south, or maybe it goes back generations to a time when my ancestors in Newfoundland feared a brutal oncoming winter of dried cod, or even worse… starvation! Come to think of it, that could be why I insist on carrying these 20 extra pounds around. Yes, that must be it!
Whatever the reason it’s my favorite month to be here and what a fitting end to a brilliant September to be holed up in a classic old beach cottage with Peter Mayer and a half dozen extraordinary acoustic guitars!
We’re here to rehearse for our upcoming tour which takes us from New Hampshire to Virginia. Peter’s son Brendan will be joining us, brother Jim will play the first two shows and other special musical guests such as Gary Green, Emily Leader and Lew London will be joining us along the way!
From there I play a few shows on my way back to Key West, spend four days at home and then fly west to play a few shows in Arizona and California.
