MUMBO JUMBO – September 2011
GREETINGS!
I’m writing early this morning from the peaceful shores of pristine Lake Waukewan, in Meredith, New Hampshire, on what is unquestionably one of the first days of Fall, even though the calendar reads August 30. The thermometer was down around 50 last night and the morning sky is that deep blue you see here as the first crisp Canadian air kicks the summer humidity south for the winter.
Speaking of humidity, this beautiful sunny, dry weather comes on the heels of Hurricane Irene, which passed through New England two days ago as a weakened tropical storm, causing gusty winds and rough seas along the coast and some pretty serious flooding inland. I was staying at a friend’s large oceanfront home and aside from one large downed branch which would have crushed the van – had I not moved it hours before- it was just a blustery, rainy New England day.
We finished the last leg of the summer tour several days ago, traveling through thirty eight states and logging over 28,000 road miles over the past four months. We began the month of August in Louisville, Kentucky, and made our way to the east coast where the highlight was a benefit show at The Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, Virginia, on August 12, for the Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Center. The brand new theater there on the campus of George Mason University was one of the nicest venues I have performed in and the band played wonderfully!
Joining me onstage was Matt Thompson on drums, Gabriel Donohue on keyboards, bass and mandolin, Gary Green on harmonica and of course Dave Edmisten on lead guitar and vocals. The 1100 seat theater was nearly full and fortunately the charity had a successful evening so it looks like it may become an annual event. We appreciate all of you who were in attendance!
From there we made our way towards New England, but not before enjoying three terrific (and much needed) days off in Annapolis, Maryland, staying with my good friend Tom Weaver. Aside from enjoying some great food and many drinks at The Boatyard Bar and Grill and Davis’s Pub in Eastport, we actually got out sailing for a couple of days.
Herb Reese got us out on a beautiful light air day down in Solomons and then I was fortunate enough to get invited to sail for an afternoon with America’s Cup Skipper Terry Hutchinson on Dick Franyo’s gorgeous Alerion 28. It was a perfect sailing day of 15 knots and Terry and I and his two sons enjoyed a fantastic four hours out on the Cheseapeake! Terry, one of the top sailors in the world, was on his last day off before flying to Valencia, Spain, for a year of training for the 2013 America’s Cup races which will be held in San Francisco. The competitors will be racing in 72 foot catamarans with a wing sail, capable of speeds of 35-40 knots! Taking the helm in a sailboat with Terry would be kind of like hitting tennis balls on a Sunday afternoon with Roger Federer! Fortunately I had met Terry in Key West two years ago and he is a very big music fan and a great guy and made me feel very comfortable! At one point while steering toward the center span of the Bay Bridge in a pretty stiff breeze with the boat heeled up, I laughed and said, “Hey, am I doing alright here, you’re a little intimidating to go sailing with!” He laughed and said, “you’re doing fine.” He might have been lying just a little!
